Remick Barn & Visitor’s Center in York, Maine

This is Old York Historical Society's Learning and Visitor’s Center adjacent to Jefferds’ Tavern. To achieve the spans required for the desired layout and to meet the code requirements for assembly loads, the new 2nd floor was designed using modern materials including structural steel and engineered wood products that would be hidden by period-appropriate finishes.

The historic post and beam structure was then married to the new 2nd floor platform framing. While the post and beam barn structure had performed well over the years, it could not safely support the snow and wind loads required by modern building codes. Welded structural steel frames were added above the timber structure to support the structural insulated roof panels. Structural insulated panels were used throughout the project for both the enclosure and insulation, but also as the lateral load resisting system.

A new foundation was designed to provide adequate support for the structure in an area with poor soils.
